When I first heard the word “Tantra”, something stirred in me that I couldn’t quite explain. It wasn’t just curiosity — it was as if the very sound of the word carried a vibration that hinted at a world beyond the ordinary. A place more alive, more magical, and more real than anything I had encountered before.
And yet, I couldn’t grasp what it actually was.
It took me years of searching before I arrived at even the faintest understanding, and even then, true comprehension only came through direct experience. Tantra is not something you can fully know from the outside. It has to be lived.
The Misconception
Today, the word “Tantra” is everywhere — and almost always misused. It has become a marketing term, a euphemism attached to seedy services and events that have little to do with the tradition itself. In a way, this speaks to the magnetic power of the word; its vibration still allures the seeker even through layers of distortion. But it also causes real confusion, and it does a disservice to something genuinely profound.
The most common misconception is that Tantra is about sex. It is not — at least, not primarily.
Tantra is about energy. It is an energy-conscious way of life that touches every part of existence: breath, movement, awareness, relationship, and yes, sexuality too. But sexuality is one thread in a much larger tapestry.
The World We Live In
We live in a culture that loudly celebrates sexual freedom, and yet markets it in a way that quickly becomes flat and unsatisfying, because it is entirely one-dimensional. Pleasure without depth. Sensation without meaning.
Tantra offers something different. It brings aliveness and depth to all parts of life — including intimacy — in a way that never grows stale. In this sense, it may be one of the most powerful antidotes to the quiet frustration and disconnection that underlies so much of modern life, even for those who consider themselves sexually liberated.
Our culture still hasn’t learned to have truly healthy, open conversations about sexuality and the body. Despite decades of so-called sexual liberation, we remain, in many ways, in the dark ages of Eros.
What Tantra Really Is
At its heart, Tantra is a spiritual tradition. It works through breath, energy, and conscious awareness, and it permeates every aspect of existence. In the Tantric worldview, the divine is not something reserved for temples or churches. She is Shakti — the living energy that moves through everything that breathes and exists.
To live with awareness of this energy in every moment is to live in a state of higher consciousness. This is what practitioners mean when they speak of kundalini awakening.
The ancients described kundalini as a serpent, coiled at the base of the spine, waiting to rise. As it ascends through the chakras, it awakens the third eye and opens the practitioner to a fundamentally different experience of reality. Sexual energy can be one pathway into this awakening — which is where Tantra and sexuality genuinely do intersect. But it is a doorway, not the destination.
A Word of Caution
Kundalini is not a quick fix or a weekend workshop. This is a powerful energy, and when it moves without proper preparation or guidance, it can be overwhelming and even harmful. This is not said to discourage you, but to encourage you to take it seriously.
Finding an experienced, trustworthy guide is essential. The depth of what is possible increases enormously when you work with someone who truly understands this tradition —
and the risks of working with someone who doesn’t are real.
What Tantric Bodywork Can Offer
This is precisely what authentic tantric bodywork offers: a safe, guided entry point into these deeper states.
People who experience traditional tantric massage often report a significant increase in energy and physical vitality, as well as a profound sense of emotional release and healing — particularly around stored trauma in the body. Conditions such as sexual trauma, erectile dysfunction, premature ejaculation, anorgasmia, and difficulties with intimacy and sensitivity are areas where some therapists and practitioners are beginning to explore tantric approaches with promising results.
And yet this ancient practice largely defies the frameworks of contemporary science. That is part of what makes it so extraordinary — that a tradition thousands of years old can reach into a modern life and offer something that no amount of technology or self-optimisation has been able to provide.
More Than Better Sex
Tantra is not just about improving your sex life, though it can certainly do that. It also speaks to a deeper spiritual hunger — one that many people feel, particularly those who have found conventional religion wanting.
At its core, Tantra is a disciplined, conscious way of life: breath, meditation, presence, and awareness, practised consistently over time. But a session with a knowledgeable practitioner can offer you a genuine glimpse of what is possible — and it may well change the way you see everything.
If you’d like to explore what Tantra could mean for you, I’d love to hear from you.
