‘Where the Mammal Meets the Mystic’

Why I believe neo-tantra can help us mend our relationship with touch, intimacy and the sacred.

We are mammals trying to become mystics.

And sometimes, I wonder whether we have tried to make the second journey while forgetting the first.

Before transcendence, awakening or spiritual evolution, there is the body. There is a nervous system. There is skin that longs to be touched, arms that instinctively reach for another human being, and a deep relational need to feel held, witnessed, wanted and safe.

Yet we are attempting to meet these ancient needs within an increasingly individualistic culture.

At the same time, many of us have inherited painful narratives about how men and women are supposed to relate. Men should pursue. Women should provide. Men should be sexually confident. Women should be desirable. One person gives, another takes. Intimacy becomes tangled with performance, obligation, conquest, rejection and shame.

And somewhere underneath all of this are two human beings.

For me, this is where neo-tantra becomes interesting.

Not simply as “tantric massage”. Not as another technique for producing pleasure. And certainly not as a spiritual gloss painted over sexuality.

At its most beautiful, I believe neo-tantric practice can offer us a space in which to mend the ways we meet one another.

A space where a woman can be honoured rather than objectified. Where a man can experience tenderness, touch and blessing without having to perform masculinity. Where pleasure does not have to be extracted or earned. Where boundaries make intimacy more possible, rather than less.

And where, in the meeting between two embodied human beings, something else can occasionally emerge.

Something sacred.

This is the territory that fascinates me: the place where the mammalian need for connection meets our human longing for transcendence.

We need touch. We need belonging. We need to feel ourselves reflected in the eyes and presence of another. But we also seem to possess this extraordinary capacity to experience relationship as something more than biological need. To encounter moments of awe, dissolution, devotion, unity and profound presence through one another.

Different traditions have given different names to these experiences. I believe this is where the root of the ancient Tantric body work originated.
Nevertheless, I am less interested in insisting upon what they are than in creating conditions in which we might encounter them.

This is part of the intention behind my Merge sessions.

They are designed for people who want to move beyond the familiar script of receiving a stereotypical tantric massage and explore conscious connection between two people instead.

There are boundaries. There is choice. There is communication. There is embodiment.

But within that container, there is also the possibility of genuine meeting.

Not performer and audience.

Not giver and consumer.

Two human beings consciously entering a relational space.

For me, empowering boundaries are precisely what allow this depth to become possible. When we know where the edges are, we can soften inside them. When nobody has to guess what is expected, presence can replace performance.

And perhaps this is one of the things our culture desperately needs.

Places where we can remember that needing one another does not make us weak.

That sensuality does not have to mean consumption.

That masculinity does not require emotional isolation.

That honouring the feminine does not require diminishing the masculine.

That boundaries and intimacy are not opposites.

And that spirituality does not require us to escape the animal body.

Perhaps the mammal and the mystic were never supposed to be separated.

Perhaps some of our deepest experiences of the sacred become possible precisely because we are embodied, relational creatures: breathing, sensing, touching, witnessing and blessing one another.

That is the neo-tantric space that interests me.

Not escaping our humanity.

Meeting it so completely that, occasionally, we glimpse something beyond ourselves.
